BRONXVILLE, NY, May 19, 2011 /Sports PR News/ -- Mr. O'Neill is a lifetime member of the disabled American Veterans Chapter #23 in the Bronx, New York. Mr. O'Neill is very patriotic and also belongs to The Guardian Society of Disabled American Veterans where he is known for his distinguisjed loyalty and compassion towards America's disabled veterans and their families. Mr. O'Neill is also a lifetime member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter #118 in the Bronx, New York. He also volunteers at Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn and the James J. Peters Medical Center in the Bronx, New York.
He was an ambassador of New York City for over 25 years as an owner/operator of a yellow New York City taxi cab (medallion 8E89) from 1973-2001. He was affectionately known as the "Candy Man" giving a lollipop or tootsie pop to his younger passengers upon approval of their parents. Always being courteous, polite and informative throughout the five boroughs of New York City and never getting lost with his maps (there were no GPS devices or digital meters back then). During the course of the 25 years he picked up many dignitaries, politicians, celebrities, entertainers and sports figures. The highlight of his taxi career was picking up Jacqueline Onassis Kennedy and her beloved daughter Caroline at Bloomingdale's on 59th & 3rd and then driving them to their residence at 1040 Fifth Ave. He had a lovely chat with her and surprised her by wishing her a Happy Birthday after hearing about it earlier that day on his radio. He also drove his vintage 1981 yellow checkered cab until 1990 and was hired for weddings, special events and commercials.
Mr. O'Neill was also the concessioner of the best public golf course in Westchester County, NY and President of O'Neill's 19th Hole, Inc. at Mohansic Golf Course. During the years of 1982 to 1992, he worked many long hours as a manager, bartender and short order cook. He attributed his success for the love of golf that he developed as a young caddy at Metropolis Golf Course in White Plains, New York. He was carrying double golf bags when he was 12 years old. He learned discipline, protocol, integrity and communication skills from the members that he caddied for throughout his high school years. He had an eagle eye for reading greens and finding lost balls. His personality and diligent work habits did not go unnoticed and he was frequently requested by many members at this prestigious golf course.
His favorite business publications are Money magazine and Forbes. His favorite charities are the U.S.O., the Haiti Relief Fund, and the Red Cross. He attributes his success to good communication skills, patience, kindness, integrity and generosity. Mr. O'Neill is also an avid collector of 1/24 scale vintage cars from the Danbury Mint Collection in Danbury, Connecticut. His current collection is valued at $20,000. In addition, he attends to his Lionel Scale O trains, which he keeps over his custom made bar and his Department Hallmark 56 layout and display of Christmas in New York City, which is very unique.
He also is a member of the Botanical Gardens and Wave Hill in the Bronx where he enjoys art exhibits and viewing the beautiful grounds of each facility. He also enjoys fishing, going on charters, attending Broadway shows, playing golf, attending Army football games at West Point, New York (season ticket holder), going to Yankees/Mets games, and dining out at fine Italian restaurants. He enjoys attending motorcycle rally events at places like Daytona, Myrtle Beach, and Sturgis.
Now 62 years old, he hopes to spend his golden years on a golf course or a beach in Florida or Arizona with a beautiful, youthful looking woman. He might even consider getting married again if "Miss Right" comes along.
