New York Brain Injury Lawyer from The Perecman Firm Warns About Rise in Brain Injuries in Prospect Park
New York brain injury lawyers at The Perecman Firm are concerned that pedestrian-bicycle accidents resulting in brain injury are on the rise in Brooklyn's Prospect Park.
NEW YORK, NY, December 17, 2011 /Sports PR News/ -- New York brain injury lawyers at The Perecman Firm are concerned that pedestrian-bicycle accidents resulting in brain injury are on the rise in Brooklyn's Prospect Park.
In the past six months, serious collisions between pedestrians and cyclists in Prospect Park left two women with severe brain injuries.
"There could be an increased incidence of brain injury because more people are bicycling in the park and participating in physical activities," said New York brain injury lawyer David Perecman, founder of The Perecman Firm, one of New York's brain injury law firms.
Even after the accidents, cyclists continued to zoom through the park at unsafe speeds.
As reported by the New York Daily News (11/27/11), a reporter with a radar gun clocked bikers going 31 mph, even through a red light at a crosswalk. The speed limit for cars and bikes in the park is 25 mph.
In June, actress Dana Jacks, 37, was hit by a bicyclist and hospitalized for 25 days. She said that she suffered 'brain trauma and face and skull fractures.
She and her husband sued the city and the cyclist who slammed into her, reported the New York Daily News. The biker, apparently, countersued Jacks, claiming she was in the wrong place. Jacks is recovering from her brain injury.
As a result of a New York bike accident in which Jacks was seriously injured, the couple also filed a Notice of Claim on August 3rd to recover monetary damages "due to the "negligence, carelessness and recklessness" of the City. Jacks blames the city's Parks Department and NYPD for their lack of traffic enforcement inside the park, reported the New York Post. (11/18/2011).
In early November, a park volunteer, Linda Cohen, 55, was struck by a cyclist near the Vanderbilt playground, leaving her with injuries so severe that doctors put her in a medically induced coma, reported The New York Times (11/20/2011).
There have been more accidents since the crash that injured Cohen, one of which involved a child.
"Bicycle and pedestrian accidents in New York can result in broken bones, serious spinal cord injury and brain injury, even fatalities and wrongful death," said New York brain injury lawyer Perecman, a brain injury lawyer in New York for over 30 years.
To prevent pedestrian-bicycle accidents in New York, Park officials are looking into proposals for increasing safety in the Park, including stronger law enforcement, new traffic patterns, better signage and an educational campaign, reported The New York Times.
Across New York City, a new campaign from the New York City Transportation Department uses haiku to spread messages urging motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to think about safety. The signs with haiku poems and quirky backgrounds were placed in high-crash zones and in heavily peopled areas, such as the Bronx Zoo, the streets around the Staten Island Ferry and the Museum of Modern Art.
