Spectrum Community Services Hosts Eleventh Annual Canoe-A-Thon

Event Raises Funds for Developmentally Disabled Adults

    WESTLAND, MI, July 16, 2011 /Sports PR News/ -- Come row your boat with Spectrum Community Services at the eleventh annual Canoe-A-Thon on Friday, July 29, 2011 at the Proud Lake Recreation Area in Commerce Township. Registration is $10.00 for a canoe or $30.00 for a kayak and includes a t-shirt. Registration forms may be obtained by calling (734) 458-8729 or www.spectrumhuman.org

A full day of fun begins at 10:00 am at the Proud Lake Canoe Launch, where participants will canoe west along the Huron River to Kensington Park. There will be a pit stop near Milford Central Park for refreshments. Proceeds from the Canoe-A-Thon will be used to purchase equipment, furniture, clothing and holiday gifts for clients. In addition, the funds will also supplement medical and dental expenses not covered by Medicaid.

Established in 1976, Spectrum Community Services provides community-based, residential treatment facilities as an alternative to institutionalization of mentally and physically challenged individuals. Some of the clients living in these residential group homes may have a combination of physical, developmental, or mental disabilities, autism or may suffer from Alzheimer's/Dementia.

Barbara Fowkes, Executive Director says, "We are proud to host our eleventh annual canoe-a-thon. As a mental health service provider, we are constantly searching for ways to provide the extras, many of us take for granted. Your dollars go a long way in making a person's life more happy, healthy and satisfying. Please join us in a day of fun, while supporting those who are unable to help themselves. "
