Palm Beaches Marathon Festival Set to Begin December 3

Palm Beaches Marathon Festival set to begin December 3 and features a 5K, music and food festival, relay, bike tour and half and full marathon.

    WEST PALM BEACH, FL, November 26, 2010 /Sports PR News/ -- The Palm Beaches Marathon Festival is pleased to announce exciting changes and new additions to their 7th Annual event which will take place December 3-5, 2010 at various locations in downtown West Palm Beach. Changes for 2010 include course modifications, the addition of a new Waterfront 5K and Music & Food Festival, the return of the Bill Bone Bike Tour, and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of South Florida Kid K and Read, Run and Recycle will move from the Meyer Amphitheatre to CityPlace.

The 2010 marathon course modifications will include a new start/finish location at the Waterfront Park between North and South Clematis Street. The beginning of the race will proceed north to Currie Park, loop back downtown along Flagler Drive and continue south to the Lantana Bridge in the Town of Lantana. Runners will enjoy a course which winds through the neighborhoods of El Cid and College Park, and along tree lined streets that border the intercostal waterway. "Each year the course changes slightly to take advantage of the beautiful topography of our area," said Mat Forrest, Race Director. "As a runner myself, I want to ensure the experience is memorable and challenging to our participants." The Palm Beaches Marathon is also a 2011 Boston Qualifier and the course is sanctioned by the USATF.

One of the exciting new additions to the marathon weekend is the Waterfront 5K presented by the Palm Beach Roadrunners, and the Waterfront Music & Food Festival both which will take place Friday, December 3. Taking advantage of the beautiful new Waterfront Park, the festival will include the 5K, live music, food and drink vendors, along with games and activities for kids of all ages. Runners will enjoy a well lit and scenic evening run along Flagler Drive north to Currie Park and back, while their friends, families and supporters soak up a festival atmosphere. The Festival goes from 6 - 10 p.m. and the 5K begins at 7 p.m.

Ronald McDonald House Charities will again sponsor the Read, Run and Recycle Marathon Mile which will take place Saturday, December 4 and change locations from the Meyer Amphitheatre to CityPlace. Last year, more than 2,500 students from Palm Beach County Schools participated in the event. Open to elementary and middle school students only, participants will read each day for 15 minutes and learn about healthy eating habits, nutrition and run a total of 25 miles from the start of the school year, then complete the last 1.2 miles at CityPlace. Students will again be encouraged to recycle their clothing by donating gently used sneakers and jackets to benefit local charities. Last year's participants logged more than 90,000 miles leading up to the marathon. "Each year our students learn valuable lessons from about healthy lifestyles and nutrition habits," said Eric Stern, Palm Beach County School District Administrator for Physical Education. "The important message of staying active and eating right throughout their life is cleverly hidden inside a fun activity."

The Bill Bone Bike Tour returns for its second year after a successful inaugural addition in 2009. Last year, 250 participants enjoyed the nonstop ride along Flagler Drive through tree lined streets of historic neighborhoods from West Palm Beach to Lake Worth. This year the bike tour will be a 20 mile ride and also include a 10 mile family loop. "The inaugural event was a huge success and was well received by the biking community," said Bill Bone Trial Attorney for Larmoyeux & Bone, P.L. "I am excited to again sponsor the tour and have local riders and families enjoy the beauty of our area."

The Publix Health & Fitness Expo will take place Friday, December 4 through Sunday, December 5 at the Harriet Himmel Theatre at CityPlace. The expo features exhibitors showcasing heath, sports and fitness products. In 2009, more than 22,000 people attend the event which stimulated business in the downtown area. Runners can register for The Palm Beaches Marathon Festival during the expo and registered participants can pick up their race packets. The Palm Beaches Marathon Festival takes place Friday, December 3 - Sunday, December 5 at the downtown Waterfront Park, CityPlace and along Flagler Drive.
